   Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Change. Excellence. Personal Development

NLP is Neuro-Linguistic Programming

NLP is a system based on the comprehension and use of communication to produce positive exchanges between people. NLP heightens three important components in the human experience: the neuro , the linguistic and programming .

The nervous system enables us to experience reality through the senses. It also runs the mental processes that affect how we interact with the world and with other people. This is the Neuro component of NLP.

Language – both verbal and non verbal – is a result of the nervous system. The patterns of communication are the expression of who we are, how we think, how we experience the world and how we experience others. Effective communication addresses how we use language to instruct, to stimulate our senses, and to verbalise concepts, goals or facts related to a task or a particular situation. That is the Linguistic component of NLP.

Learning, memory and creativity are functions of neuro-linguistic programmes which work to achieve outcomes or goals. These programmes or strategies can work at various degrees of effectiveness and productiveness - some are more effective and productive than others. Programming emphasizes the existence of patterns and sequences in everyday behaviour and the way we interact with our emotions, motivations and the environment around us. That is the Programming component of NLP.

"If you care for your mind, your mind will then look after you…”

The origin of many illnesses is in the mind, yet the body is the place where the illness usually manifests.

With NLP, we don't treat physical symptoms but we treat the deeper levels of the client's mind, body, and spirit, and this leads to evolutionary changes in the person. These changes allow the client to fully develop all of their potential.

If you care for your mind, your mind will then look after you.

Self-esteem

Almost all psychological problems – from anxiety and depression to self-sabotage in your job or studies – come from low self-esteem.

In this chaotic and competitive world in which we live, we have to face reality. Both personal happiness and economic survival are based on our understanding and promotion of our self-image and our self-esteem.

Emotions

We often judge our experiences by what we are doing (our behaviours), forgetting that “what we are doing” and “how we feel” about what we are doing can be very different things.

An emotion is essentially “a response of feeling” in a certain moment. Emotions are the product derived from our thoughts and our physical bodily attitude. Our behavior, our physical actions, and our verbal expression, are a sub-product derived from our emotions. So our emotions are the impulse of our actions.

As with physical energy, emotional energy is neither created nor dissolved. It is only transformed. Our behaviour is a direct result of our emotions. Emotions are not the judgements we make of them (good, bad, helpful, etc.) nor are they the behaviours they generate.

Emotions are our friends, that give us information about what is happening around us. There are neither good emotions nor bad emotions. All of them are useful and convenient to experience. And our emotions are warning us, advising us that there is something in our self, or our environment, that needs special attention.

One of the many NLP techniques involves our ability to detect the nature of an emotion, and our ability to be able to transform that emotion into another emotion, which will help us profitably with our relationships and/or our jobs.

Relationships - Couple conflict.

Individuals in relationships share a very special kind of communication which is substantially different to any other interactive dynamic. Therefore, when addressing conflict resolution in a relationship, the therapeutic approach must be carefully structured. It must pay attention to its sensitive differences (respecting the communication in general).

Relationships are complex. Individuals attribute perceived behaviours to the other person and base their interactions according to those perceptions. This generates the communication dynamic. This dynamic can be loaded with emotion which can lead to relationship conflict. NLP can help neutralise unwanted emotions and invoke desirable emotions to enhance the relationship.

Allergies

The NLP has developed a technique to deal with allergies. It works better when the person is allerg ic to a specific substance which is easily identifiable . This method was developed by Robert Dilts, Tim Hallbom and Suzi Smith.

A warning, the method that I propose is not a substitute for medical treatment, it work s with it. The allerg y treatment that NLP propose s stabilises the immun e system, breaking the link in between the allergen and the allergic reaction.

Anxiety and stress state

When NLP addresses stress and anxiety it refers to how people organize time (past, present and future) in their lives and their mental frameworks. In other words, it is how they understand and manage time. People organize their experiences, of any type, and record them in one way or the other conditioning how they understand the world, relate to their environment and therefore how they understand the nature of time. Each person has their own personal understanding of time. People with anxiety watch time run as a continuum line, punctual, one hour behind the other, boundaries are limited and defined with absolute precision; they watch hours go past unable to stop them. On the contrary, for people who suffer stress time is something that enfolds them and is happening in the moment. For some, the future is unreal and terrible while the past only exist because of the suffered experience. Recording time this way supposes the past, present and future are inside or behind of the individual. Their key characteristics are the association of memories and lack of vision for the future. To approach these structures of time, lineal and enfolding, NLP has developed the Time Line Technique . In therapy, many of the changes achieved are the result of modifications to the individual's subjective experience of their time concept and its representation.

"Introducing NLP" by Joseph O´Connor and John Seymour:

"NLP is the art and science of personal excellence. Art because everyone brings their unique personality and style to what they do, and this can never be captured in words or techniques. Science because there is a method and process for discovering the patterns used by outstanding individuals in any field to achieve outstanding results. This process is called modeling, and the patterns, skills and techniques so discovered are being used increasingly in counseling, education and business for more effective communication, personal development and accelerated learning."
